1989 - Reopening of San Fernando Boulevard
1989
Mickey and Minnie Mouse help Burbank Mayor Robert Bowne and members of Burbank City Council cut the ceremonial ribbon at the reopening of San Fernando Blvd. to traffic on October 20, 1989. Front row, left to right: Tom Flavin, Mayor Bob Bowne, Mary Lou Howard, Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Michael Hastings, and Tim Murphy. The section of San Fernando Rd. had been the location of the pedestrian-only Golden Mall since 1967. Though optimism had been high when the Golden Mall had first opened, many people later considered it a failure, and it was hoped that reopening the area to traffic would help revitalize the downtown shopping district, according to the Los Angeles Times. The ribbon-cutting was followed by a parade of antique cars through the mall. Twenty-two years earlier, Mickey Mouse had also served as the grand marshal for a final parade of cars down San Fernando Blvd. at the ceremony that closed the street to traffic in order to build the Golden Mall.
