1982 - Burbank Temporary Aid Center
1982
A volunteer answers the telephone at the Burbank Temporary Aid Center site at 269 East San Jose Avenue. The sign on the wall behind the volunteer reads "WHAT IS THE BURBANK TEMPORARY AID CENTER? A LOCAL COMMUNITY SERVICE STAFFED BY VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORTED BY YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS." To the left of the sign is a Burbank city street map. Founded in 1974 to address a growing need, the Burbank Temporary Aid Center provided a centralized location to assist individuals and families needing food, transportation, showers, laundry facilities, and emergency shelter. From the beginning, BTAC operated from various locations throughout the city including the founder’s garage and various vacant residential properties. This 1980s photo of a small bungalow on East San Jose Avenue represents BTAC’s fifth location before moving to its current site at 1304 West Burbank Boulevard in 1995. Currently, the 269 East San Jose location is the parking lot for the Colony Theater.
