1950 - Personnel Line-up & Rolling Equipment
Fire Department personnel and emergency vehicles line-up outside the department headquarters on February 1, 1950. The building was Burbank's original city hall, built in 1916 on the southwest corner of Olive Avenue and 3rd Street. After the new city hall opened across Olive in 1943 (visible in the background of the photo) it housed the Burbank Fire Department and was later home to a number of police department offices. The old building was razed in late 1959 to make way for a new City Hall Annex, part of the city's 10 Year Capital Improvement Program, according to the Los Angeles Times. A list of names on the back of the photo reads: "Left to Right: Harry Mock, R. Markham, B. Snyder, P. Nare, H. Lawson, L. Galente, W. Weaver, A. Wilkinson, H. Tolman, R. Gain, Katie Willeford, W. Short, W. Morgan, M. Danaby, W. Taylor".
1950s - Burbank Police Boys Band
The Burbank Police Boys Band was founded in 1953 and represented Burbank in events such as the Rose Parade, Fourth of July celebrations, and competitions with other youth bands in the area. In 1974, the group began to allow girl members and changed its name to the Police Youth Band. The group was disbanded in the 1980s. “Burbank Police Boys Band- 50’s”--back of photo.
1950s - Jail Cells in the Basement of City Hall
A view of two jail cells in the basement of City Hall in the 1950s. When the building opened in 1943, it increased the number of cells from one in the old city hall to nine in the new, along with two “tanks,” allowing for the separation of “youths, felony cases, and inebriates,” according to a September 12, 1942, story in the Los Angeles Times.
