Fire Department

In 1950, the Fire Department was in a facility across Olive Avenue from City Hall. This vine-covered, two-story brick building was an early predecessor to the modern joint-use Police & Fire Headquarters facility which opened in 1998 at Orange Grove Avenue and Third Street.

2003 - Hillside Fire
According to the Burbank Leader: "Firefighters were battl[ing] a 15-acre blaze Tuesday night in Burbank. The fire is considered suspicious in origin and started about 3:45 p.m. in the area between De Bell Golf Course and County Club Drive. Firefighters, engines, brush crews and water-carrying helicopters from neighboring departments including Burbank, Pasadena and the city and county of Los Angeles responded to the fire."

From City Council Meeting Minutes: Fire Chief Mike Davis accepted a donation from Target Stores, Burbank Empire Center, in the amount of $1,000 to benefit the Fire Department’s public education efforts. Mr. Neil Kennedy, representing Target Stores, presented the check.

Mayor Stacey Murphy presented Captain Canfield with a plaque commemorating his selection as the 2003 Burbank Fire Department Fire Fighter of the Year, as well as a Certificate of Recognition. Next, Chief Davis introduced the 2004 Fire Fighter of the Year, Eric Clements. Mayor Murphy presented a plaque and Certificate of Recognition to Fire Fighter Clements.

From City Council Meeting Minutes: Mayor Jef Vander Borght acknowledged the awards ceremony held earlier in the day in honor of members of the Burbank Fire Department who went above and beyond the call in the performance of their duties. Interim Fire Chief Tracy Pansini introduced the following recipients who earned Distinguished Service Medals: Fire Fighters/Paramedics Victor Marquez and Anthony Soffa; and, Medal of Valor recipients: Fire Fighters Ken Allen, Mike McDonald, Scott Schweitzer and Travont White; Engineer Doug Puckett; and, Captain Pat Latham.

From City Council Meeting Minutes: Fire Marshall Dave Starr briefly described the Fire Regional Occupational Program (ROP), noting this is the seventh graduating class since the inception of the program. Chief Starr introduced Captain Greg Rhoads, who presented the following graduates: Bertha Cardoza; Matan Haft; Jonathan King; Brian Lowers; Ryan Martin; Jason Martinez; Javier Murillo; Jordan Murphy; Ryan Richardson; Zachery Sunday; Mikal Swanson; Rudolph Thompson; Jose Vaca; Jonathan Van Wagener; Ismael Elazquez; and, Darlene Datuin. Mayor Ramos congratulated the graduates and assisted Chief Mehling with the presentation of certificates to the graduates.
2005 - Fill the Boot Fundraiser
Burbank Firefighter participates in the annual Fill-The-Boot campaign for Muscular Dystrophy. Each year, more than 100,000 fire fighters hit the streets asking citizens in their community to make a donation to MDA, helping them fill their boot with contributions. Fill-the-Boot funds support MDA’s services locally and nationally, including medical clinics staffed with specialists in muscle disease and summer camps for kids. These funds also help finance MDA’s worldwide research program seeking treatments for diseases such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) (from burbankfirefighters.org).
2006 - City Council Presentations
From City Council Meeting Minutes: Mayor Todd Campbell and Chief Tracy Pansini introduced 2006 Firefighter of the Year, Captain Greg Rhoads, who was recognized for his outstanding dedication and contributions to the Department, fire service and the community. He noted Captain Rhoads’ leadership and participation in organizing and maintaining several programs which exemplify his commitment, including serving as a Burbank Firefighters Local 778 Board Member for 14 years, during which time he also served as Vice President.
