Burbank Mayor (1953-1954) Carl M. King
Carl M. King served as Mayor from 1953-1954. From notes on photo: “Carl M. King 1953-1957. Councilman and Mayor." Carl Marcus King was born on December 5, 1908 in Utah and died on April 19, 1988 in California. His Burbank Leader obituary read, "Former Burbank Mayor Carl M. King, 79, died April 19, at his home in Newhall. Born in Garland, Utah, he moved to Burbank in the middle 1930s. King was a self-employed building contractor. He served 11 years with the city of Burbank as councilman and member of the City Planning Commission. He became Mayor on May 1, 1953. He remained in office until August 1954. In 1954, King was named by the County Board of Supervisors to the Los Angeles County Watershed Protection and Rehabilitation Commission. In the same year he had been appointed to the League of California Cities Civil Defense Committee, and was named a member of the state Advisory Board of the California Safety Council. King served as president of the Burbank Festival of Progress, and was named Burbank Citizen of the Year 1957. He was a member of the Burbank-Glendale Chapter of Contractors Association, the board of directors of Kiwanis International, the Burbank Chamber of Commerce, and the Parent-Teacher Association. King was most active in the Verdugo Hills Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was a scoutmaster of Jamboree Troop 10 at the National Jamboree in Newport Beach, in 1953, and became the recipient of the Master Scout Award. He attended several other Jamboree events including Canada, and most recently Australia this past January. He was district commissioner and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Mr. King was also very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was the former bishop of the Burbank Ward, served a three year mission in Minnesota, and during his stay in Portland, Ore., he served as area supervisor for all church construction in the Pacific Northwest. Mr. King is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons, Larry and David of Burbank, Wallace of Portland, Ore., Leon of Sacramento and Dennis of Canyon Country; daughter, Sharon Mortenson of Cupertino; 31 grandchildren; one great-grandchild."
Burbank Mayor (1954-1956) Earle C. Blais
Earle C. Blais served as Mayor from 1954-1956. From notes on photo: “Earle C. Blais 1943-1957." Earle Charles Blais was morning in Central Falls, Rhode Island on April 20, 1920 and died on March 8, 2005 in Burbank, California.
Burbank Mayor (1956-1957) H.B. "Jerry" Bank
Herluf Bernhardt Bank was born August 6, 1909 in Wisconsin and died February 19, 1986 in Hemet, California. H.B. "Jerry" Bank served as Mayor from 1956-1957. From notes on photo: “H.B. ‘Jerry’ Bank 1953-1961." His Burbank Leader obituary read : "H.B. 'Jerry' Bank, mayor of Burbank in 1956, and a city councilman from 1944 to 1960, died Feb. 19 in Hemet, of natural causes. The 76-year old Wisconsin native will be cremated following services at the First Presbyterian Church, 515 Kimball Avenue, in Hemet. Bank was swept into office in Burbank in 1944 on an anti-gambling platform. A founding member of the city's Crime Prevention Committee, he headed a successful movement to unseat three incumbents in an enffort to 'clean the city up' and prevent gambling interests from coming into town. The former mayor was active in the Burbank Masonic Lodge, the Burbank Shrine Club, and many other civic organizations during his 26 year residence in the area. He was in the industrial real estate business, was co-founder and president of the Burbank Multiple Listing Association, as well as president of the Burbank Realty Board. In 1958, he was voted Realtor of the Year. Bank was also a former president of the Burbank Chamber of Commerce and president of the Optimist Club. Harmon Bennett, Burbank city manager from 1956 to 1965, said Bank had 'a deep sense of civic obligation and gave generously of his time and talent to, as he used to say, hopefully leave a place better than he found it.' Vice Mayor Mary Kelsey said Bank was well known throughout the region 'and well thought of.' The former mayor is survived by his wife, Alfrieda, and a brother."
Burbank Mayor (1957-1958) Edward C. Olson
Edward C. Olson served as Mayor from 1957-1958. From notes on photo: “Edward Olson 1955-1959." Edward C. Olson was born on May 31, 1906 in Clay Iowa and died on July 16, 1988 in Laguna Hills, California.
Burbank Mayor (1958-1959) Dallas Williams
Dallas Williams served as Mayor from 1958-1959 and 1964-1965. He was born on May 13, 1919 in Tacoma, Washington and died on June 4, 1991 in Los Angeles, California. His Burbank Leader obituary read, "Dallas Mason Williams, two-time Burbank mayor and one of Southern California radio's earliest independent commercial producers, died Tuesday after a long bout with cancer. He was 72. According to his wife, Gayle Scott Williams, her husband was 'the only liberal' on a conservative council. Williams had a hand in several city street improvements, including several of Burbank's many overpasses. As a pioneer in off-beat commercials, a more contemporary generation of listeners may remember Williams best for the 'Hey, Culligan Man!' commericals. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the coveted 'Clio.' In 1988 Williams received the Southern California Broadcasters Association Career Achievement Award. The Hollywood Advertising Club presented William with its International Broadcasting Award over a period spanning 15 years, from 1961-1976. A native of Tacoma, Washington, Williams attended the University of Washington and received a Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law. He was an active member of ASCAP, SAG, AFTRA, AARP, and the Procrastinators' Club of America. Williams is survived by his wife, Gayle; sons Dallas Williams Jr, of Arcata, California and Bayard Hugh Williams of Cauycos, California." June 5, 1991.
