1960 - Clayton M. Paige Memorial
1960s
Photo of City Manager Harmon Bennett addressing the attendees at Clayton M. Paige's memorial in 1960. Paige, who died on February 14, 1960, had been Burbank city engineer and public works director since 1941, according to the Los Angeles Times. Paige was nationally known in his field and pioneered a process of cut-and-cover reclamation in which mountain canyons are filled with alternate layers of refuse and earth resulting in large usable land areas. Among his other achievements was the planning of the DeBell Golf Course. Paige's memorial was held at the Burbank Public Works Department Yard, a project Paige helped create, likely around its opening in May 1960. Seated in the front row are former mayor Earle C. Blais, Paige's widow Jeanne, and Paige's son Whitney. Standing to the right of Bennett is Burbank Mayor Earle William Burke. Standing further to the right, wearing a bowtie, is Vice Mayor Newell Cooper.
