Newell Cooper served as Mayor from 1960-1961. From notes on photo: “Newell Cooper 1957-1963.” Newell J. Cooper was born in West Jordan, Utah on May 7,1920 to Samuel Johnson Cooper and Lillian Osee Beckstead, descendants of Mormon Pioneers. Newell married Irene Evelyn Rowbotham on September 28, 1939 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a veteran of World War II, flying as a navigator and 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1947 and owned his own practice in Burbank, California and then in Phoenix, Arizona. He also owned a pool service company in Phoenix. In 1957 he was elected to the City Council in Burbank, California and served through 1963 as a Councilman, Vice-Mayor and then Mayor. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 50 years. He was a lifelong member of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his wife Irene were avid genealogists and among other projects, worked together on extracting information for the 1880 U.S. Census Project and the Ellis Island Project. Newell passed away on May 22, 2008 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was a resident of Arizona for 45 years and was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Irene, his parents, a brother Fred, a sister Alice and a daughter Janine. He is survived by two sisters, two daughters and a son, 19 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren. He was buried with military honors next to his beloved wife Irene.
