1937 - Exterior of Old Public Services Department Administration Building
Photo Art Shop
1937
Exterior of the old Public Services administration building at the corner of Magnolia Boulevard and Lake Street. The photo is labeled as being taken on September 20, 1937, but the sidewalk, landscaping, and structures in the background suggest much later, possibly in the mid- to late-1940s. The building and another structure, a well and pump house situated directly across Lake Street, were built in the early 1920s and used by the Public Service Department until 1948, when they were razed and construction on the current Public Services Building began. The Public Service Department itself was formed in 1913, following the city’s sale of bonds totaling $70,000 to purchase electrical and water facilities, and changed its name to Burbank Water and Power in 2001. Notes on back of photo: “"Photo Art Shop, Burbank Calif. September 20, 1937, Public Service Dept. Office, Lake Street & Magnolia Blvd."
