1962 - Bicycle Safety Class at Olive Park
1962
Burbank’s bicycle safety program was started in 1951 as a joint project of the Burbank and Magnolia Optimists Clubs, the Burbank Police Department, and the Burbank PTA. It was estimated by police in 1964 that the program reached 75% of Burbank boys and girls. At that time, bike accidents had dropped 56% since the program’s beginning, according to the Los Angeles Times. The program involved a series of riding tests and bike inspections, as well as strict police enforcement of bicycle traffic rules and “mandatory safety education school for violators.” In this photo, a girl attempts to negotiate the turns of a bike path drawn in the parking lot of Olive Park. From notes on photo: “Bicycle safety class at Olive Park 1962.”
