Habitat for Humanity, an international nonprofit organization that provides low-income families with affordable housing by building or renovating homes and apartment buildings; is constructing eight townhomes at 191 and 195 Elmwood Avenue. The project is part of the Elmwood Neighborhood Beautification Program the city began about three years ago in an effort to reduce high crime rates in the area. Those attending the groundbreaking gathered at the end of a cul-de-sac in front of the Elmwood Achievement Center where neighborhood children can go to study and play. The front of the center is decorated with colorful tiles designed and painted by children. After the ceremony, about 100 volunteers began working on the townhomes, which are being built from the ground up."Two unidentified women hold a picture frame while Mickey Mouse holds an oversized check for $70,000 from the Walt Disney Company made out to Habitat for Humanity.
