1998 - Habitat for Humanity
1998
According to the Burbank Leader: "About 500 People attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Habitat for Humanity's first home project in Burbank. Habitat for Humanity, an international nonprofit organization that provides low-income families with affordable housing by building or renovating homes and apartment buildings; is constructing eight townhomes at 191 and 195 Elmwood Avenue. The project is part of the Elmwood Neighborhood Beautification Program the city began about three years ago in an effort to reduce high crime rates in the area. Those attending the groundbreaking gathered at the end of a cul-de-sac in front of the Elmwood Achievement Center where neighborhood children can go to study and play. The front of the center is decorated with colorful tiles designed and painted by children. After the ceremony, about 100 volunteers began working on the townhomes, which are being built from the ground up." Mayor Dave Golonski addresses the crowd.
